Could this be the newest epidemic?
Hi John
Here is an interesting little tidbit to start your Friday.
The number of Americans doing a Google search for “hemorrhoids” each week has tripled since 2008.
The term "hemorrhoids" was searched about 40,000 times weekly between 2004 and 2008, but that number shot up to about 80,000 weekly searches by 2010, and blasted to nearly 120,000 during some weeks in 2013!
Now, some experts have claimed that this increase is likely due to “people being more comfortable with the Internet” or “people feeling uneasy discussing hemorrhoids with their doctor.”
While that may be true to a certain degree and can account for some of the upsurge, methinks that the biggest factor here is that increasing numbers of people are having trouble you-know-where.
Let's take a peek at what's going down there with hemorrhoids, as well as its "kissing cousin"--an anal fissure--see why they may be on the rise and most importantly, how to stop them from being such a “PITA.”
A hemorrhoid vs. an anal fissure
Technically everyone has hemorrhoids-hemorrhoids are actually just the veins around your anus or in the lower rectum.
But they become a royal pain when they get swollen and inflamed….so the term “hemorrhoids” has taken on that common meaning.
An anal fissure, on the other hand, is an actual rip or tear in the lining of your anal canal.
The symptoms of both hemorrhoids and fissures are similar and can include:
  • Pain or burning during bowel movements
  • Bright red blood on the outer portion of your feces or on the toilet paper
  • Itching or irritation around your anal area
Hemorrhoids and fissures are most commonly the result of chronic constipation or diarrhea.
In addition, hemorrhoids can be brought on by pregnancy due to the increased pressure in the rectal area from the developing fetus, while the force or stretching of tissue during childbirth or anal intercourse can lead to a fissure.
They’re not life-threatening…but can be embarrassing
Although they don't cause life-threatening complications, hemorrhoids and fissures are very uncomfortable and can be, well, downright embarrassing
Let's face it -- it's difficult to concentrate on school or work, sit still during meetings or classes, walk for extended periods of time or become intimate with your loved one when your back side is hurting, burning, itching and possibly even bleeding.
Now, if an anal fissure is severe enough, it can extend into your internal anal sphincter, which is a ring of muscle that holds your “back door” closed except during bowel movements.
A tear in the sphincter muscle causes it to spasm, which then makes the tear even worse and prevents healing.  At that point, surgery is usually needed to close the fissure and stop your pain.
Keep your anus young-looking and more
Now, a new up and coming "solution" for fissures is--get this--Botox injections
Yup--the same stuff that paralyzes countless faces as it erases wrinkles in Hollywood can now paralyze your butt.  How nice.
Oh, and the possible side effects include pain at the injection site and leakage of gas or stool (anal incontinence).
I’ll take the fissure, thank you.
And let's not forget that common surgeries for hemorrhoids include squeezing them off with rubber bands (ligation), laser burning or cutting them out (hemorrhoidectomy).
I can't even think of those without wincing.  Plus many times the hemorrhoids can return after you've had these procedures done.
Other hemorrhoid/fissure treatments
In addition to surgery, other medical treatments are:
  • Hydrocortisone cream
  • Rectal steroid cream
  • Nitroglycerine ointment
  • Sitz baths
But just like with most other pharmaceutical offerings, these are merely a Band-Aid approach that do nothing to address the underlying CAUSE of the fissure or hemorrhoid -- which in most cases is incomplete digestion and anything-but-normal bowel movements.
So...you can slather on all the creams you want where the sun don't shine, but if you don't stop what caused the fissure or hemorrhoid to begin with, you can bet your bottom dollar (no pun intended) you'll get another one.  And another.  And ANOTHER.
And while sitz baths do help ease the inflammation, once the bath is over so is your relief.
A better idea—calm hemorrhoids & fissures from within
The best way to help heal hemorrhoids and anal fissures and prevent them from recurring is to make your digestion as smooth and efficient as possible.
And that's the result of these two key factors:
1- Stop putting lots of pie (and other junk) in your “pie-hole”
The typical American-type diet is loaded with nutrient-poor junk and combinations of foods that don't digest well when eaten together.
This causes inefficient digestion and leads to wastes that don't move through your intestines (and anus) like they should.
In other words, you're practically putting out the welcome mat for chronic constipation or diarrhea.
So it’s only a matter of time before hemorrhoids and anal fissures come a-knocking at your back door.
But the valuable information inside the pages of the Great Taste No Pain manuals can help turn that around for you fast.

2- Engage the power of your internal army
The beneficial bacteria in your intestines play a major role in digesting your foods, keeping nutrient absorption high and encouraging regular bowel movements.
But when they are greatly outnumbered by harmful bacteria (and many people's are these days thanks to our diets high in refined carbs and soda), they can't do their job.
Plus the harmful bacteria can “eat away” at your intestinal wall and make it porous, which can then allow toxins and undigested foods seep out into your abdomen and bloodstream, making you sicker and causing even more pain.
That’s why it’s so important to keep your internal “army” of friendly bacteria strong and healthy.
In addition to having a healthy diet like I described above, Super Shield multi-strain probiotic formula can help bring your intestinal flora back into a good balance (at least 85% beneficial bacteria and no more than 15% harmful).

Here’s why:
One of the superstar beneficial bacteria in Super Shield is Bifidobacteria lactis.  This strain of helpful bacteria colonizes very well in your colon, bringing about natural intestinal balance faster.
In studies, B. lactis has shown to relieve constipation and diarrhea symptoms and improve the overall intestinal environment.  It also destroys unfriendly bacteria in the gut because it produces hydrogen peroxide, which is an excellent natural antibacterial agent!
Let B. lactis and Super Shield's 12 other potent probiotic strains bring about a healthier intestinal flora balance (and better digestion) for YOU.
Remember:  Hemorrhoids, fissures and other GI problems don't need to be a pain in YOUR butt any longer!
See for yourself what a difference it can make to help encourage smooth digestion and a strong flora balance.
I'm sure you'll see the difference very soon like Doris did below!

Dear Sherry,
I accidentally accessed your web site looking for information about how long it is safe to take stool softeners.
About a year ago I ended up in the ER with impacted bowels. I only went because I thought I was having appendicitis. But it turned out to be impacted bowels. I was prescribed laxatives and stool softeners.
I took the laxatives twice a day as prescribed for 5 days and on the fifth day, my electrolytes got so messed up, I almost had to go back to the ER. I tried a sports drink first and it brought me back in balance enough to avoid the hospital again, but taught me: Doctors don't have the answers to my on-going problems with constipation.
I was diagnosed about 15 years ago with IBS. And have had bouts of constipation all my adult life (I'm 57). I don't like to take any kind of medication but have been taking the stool softeners since the ER visit with some success. I took the mildest laxative I could find when I would get backed up.
I was still feeling awful, bloated, achy and like I have a band around my waist that keeps getting tighter and tighter.

Like you, I have always tried to eat right. Lots of veggies and fruit, low fat, very little red meat, whole grains, I've tried to add fiber to everything, but was still having problems staying regular.

I think the combinations have been most of the problem for me. I started following your Great Taste No Pain plan and have had amazing results! I stopped the stool softeners and laxatives for the first time in a year. It took 3 days to have a regular BM, but it was the biggest BM I've ever had and I feel so much better!

A huge benefit has been that the aches and pains I have had for some time have lessened a lot!

I have read about food combining but was confused about how to do it. You have made it very easy to understand. I feel like I have just started to get my life back! I feel like I can start exercising again because I will have the energy to do it.

Thank you SO much for this plan! It is truly a great service you are doing.

Sincerely,

Doris
