Such sinking would be blamed on Syria and/or Russia, and used as a pretext for retaliation. (The U.S. of course has a long history of similar shenanigans, such as USS Maine; foreknowledge of Pearl Harbor attack; Gulf of Tonkin non-Incident; USS Cole).
